Spring Wardrobe No. 2 - Slouch Top

I'm nearing the end of my Spring Wardrobe series. Just a few more pieces to show. This is number 2 on the list, the Slouch Top from the book DIY Couture by Rosie Martin. I had intended to use a Robin's Egg Blue silk type fabric but after drafting the pattern, I discovered that I didn't have enough fabric. I'm planning to do a full book review on DIY Couture after I make at least one more project from it. But I will say now, that it does not provide any estimated yardage for the projects. For my slouch top I needed about 1 1/3 yards of fabric. Not to worry, I have put the blue fabric to use and made a tank top, to be shared soon.

The book provides instructions on how to draft a pattern using a piece of clothing you already own. The instructions say to draft the pattern directly on the fabric but I chose to draft it on paper so that I can use it over and over. The unique part of this design is that the back has extensions that wrap around to the front. The fit is very loose and the armholes gape a bit but it's a cool top. Totally the kind of top that you can wear to an art opening and fit in without looking over the top.

The pattern instructions are for a fully lined top which is a good idea because of how gapey the armholes are. You can see the reverse side even while it's on. I chose to make french seams and bind the edges with bias strips. The fabric is a light weight cotton with a diagonal weave. I also used this fabric when I made this dress. It's really subtle but the bias strips make horizontal lines to the body of the top.

Here is the slouch top styled in a casual way. I did try the top with my knit pleated pants but two baggy items look kind of schlumpy together. The slouch top works best with a slim silhouette on the bottom. And of course a little bit of heel doesn't hurt either.

Outfit above:
Slouch Top
Boyfriend Jeans (Mine are from Land's End Canvas and no longer available but they're similar to these and these)
Woven Wedge Sandals (similar to these and these)

  1. On the hanger, I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. On you, it is darling. Love that high pleat on the front hem, where lots of style bloggers tend to tuck in their tunic tops anyway. Clever.

  2. Love it! Can't wait for your review of that book. Is there only 1 pattern piece for this top? Wow.
