DIY Tutorial – Christmas Juice Glass Set

My favorite part of the Christmas season is Christmas morning; waking up early, rolling out of bed, exploring what Santa left in my stocking and of course a big family breakfast loaded with savory egg casserole, sweet cinnamon rolls, bitter coffee and the juicy mandarin oranges from the bottom of my stocking. So when I received the opportunity to create this Christmas DIY as part of a campaign for Martha Stewart Crafts and Plaid Online, I knew I wanted to make something special for the Christmas morning breakfast table.

To prepare for the post I received a big box full of Martha Stewart painting and decoupage crafts. The decoupage products are really cool. They work on fabric, paper, wood and glass. In addition to the glues, they also have pre-made fabric and paper pieces that you can use in your decoupage projects. What's even cooler is that when applied to glass, the decoupage is dishwasher safe. You can find the full range of Martha Stewart products including craft paint, glass paint, decoupage and jewelry at Michael's stores or at Plaid online.

To make this set, I bought six glasses and a bottle with a stopper. Then I found some vintage clip art online and composed it together. These bottles would be great as gifts filled with homemade liqueur or another beverage. You could also serve apple cider or cranberry juice for an equally festive drink.

How to Decoupage a Juice Glass Set

Supplies:
Glasses and Bottle (I got these from IKEA)
Printed Clip Art
Martha Stewart Decoupage Multi-Surface Finish - Durable Gloss
Martha Stewart Crafts Decoupage Brush
Rubbing Alcohol

Instructions:

Step 1: Find the clip art you want to use and size it for your glasses and pitcher. Print out your designs and test it on your glassware to see if you like the size and price. Adjust as needed.

Step 2: Cut out graphics using scissors or an x-acto knife. When using scissors for detailed cuts, I hold the scissors steady in my right hand and move the paper with my left hand carefully following the edge of the design as I very slowly close the scissors.

Step 3: Clean the area you are going to decoupage with rubbing alcohol. Apply decoupage glue to glass and to back of paper design. Place paper on glass and tap down with the handle of your paint brush. I wanted a really clean look so I removed any excess glue from the glass surface with a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol.

Step 4: Allow glue to dry for 1-2 hours. Apply another layer of glue on design, clean up as desired. Repeat 1-2 times. (Some of the color did come off when I painted over it with glue. You might be able to prevent this if you spray your print outs with a fixative.)

Step 5: Allow the glassware to cure for 28 days then it will be dishwasher safe. If you make this before the end of the month, they'll be ready just in time for Christmas.
