Fall Sewing No. 4 Teal Pencil Skirt

Last week I took a little detour from my full throttle sewing pace to bring you a knitting project. But don't worry I'm still working on my Fall sewing projects. Today I have number 4 on my list, the teal pencil skirt, to share with you. I did hit a few bumps in the road but I'm pleased with the final result.

I drafted the pattern myself using the method described in the book Design-It-Yourself Clothes by Cal Patch. I really love this book and highly recommend it if you want to try making your own patterns. The writing style is a little conversational and fun to read while being highly informative.

I made a muslin for a very fitted skirt, cut my fashion fabric, sewed it up and it was really, really tight. I think the problem is that my muslin was a really thin fabric and the fashion fabric is really thick. So that extra thickness just scooped up any extra wiggle room. To give myself a little extra room, I let out the seams and used an exposed zipper. I love the shape of this skirt and I still want to make this pattern extra perfect.

This skirt is such a great shape that it goes with almost anything. I hope that I do get a lot of use out of it.

In outfit above:
Statement Necklace (similar here and here)
Scoopneck White T-shirt from J.Crew (currently on sale!)
Becky Ankle Bootie from Sole Society

On an unrelated note, I wanted to mention the lipstick I'm wearing is Model Co. Party Proof Matte Lipstick in Dusk 'Til Dawn. It's a very, very light color, almost a non-color. At first I wasn't sure about it but it's grown on me. I got it as part of a Birchbox shipment. Birchbox is kind of a beauty subscription program. For just $10 a month you get a box with five high end product samples sent to your door. I've been a subscriber for about 4 months and it's really fun to get a little surprise every month. If you're looking for a little way to treat yourself, try it out!

  3. Nice skirt and beautiful color! This book is already on my shelf, but I don't dare to start drawing my own patterns. After your post I will probably give it a try.
