To kick off my DIY Winter Weekends Wardrobe, I have a new pair of knitted socks. In the interest of full disclosure, I need to admit that I actually started these socks back in May. And I finished them last weekend. Are you wondering why one toe is black? Well, these socks were stash busters. I had one ball of blue variegated yarn that I bought years ago and I thought it would be just enough for one pair. When I got to the end of the second sock and realized it was not quite enough, I substituted in some black yarn leftover from these socks.
The pattern for the socks is Meida's Socks from the book Favorite Socks by Ann Budd. I love this book and have knit a lot of the patterns in it. If you have any interest in knitting socks, I highly recommend this book. The patterns are beautiful and just challenging enough. The only changes I made to the pattern was to make the leg a little shorter and the foot a little longer (I have big feet :). These socks were fairly easy to make. The only mildly tricky part is the cable stitch. It's done without a cable needle with might seem tricky but I like it because you don't have to fiddle around with an extra piece of equipment. My yarn was kind of thick (for socks) and I didn't have any problems with dropped stitches.
Socks are one of my favorite things to make. They are small and portable but interesting and sometimes challenging to do. I do not like boring (i.e. easy) knitting. My favorite parts are turning the hell and shaping the toe. It's a little exciting to reach each step in shaping the foot!

These look super cozy! I could have used about 4 of them this week during the polar vortex (side note: why does the news have to be so dramatic?)? Unfortunately, I don't know how to knit, but I have my list of winter sewing projects that I'm undertaking.
