DIY Tutorial – St. Patrick's Day Lapel Pins

St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner and it's time to start thinking about what to wear. No one likes to get pinched but most people don't want to dress in full leprechaun regalia. To solve this I created two little DIY lapel pins for St. Patrick's Day that add just a touch of green to any outfit. They are both easy and fun to make as well as being great gifts.

DIY Embroidered Shamrock Lapel Pin

Supplies
Scrap felt
Embroidery thread and needle
Disappearing ink pen
Scissors
Safety Pin (for wearing your lapel pin)

Instructions
Step 1: Draw outline of shamrock. Stitch outline of shamrock using a backstitch.

Step 2: Fill in shamrock with French Knots. (See my tutorial here.)

Step 3: Trim fabric with shamrock in the center and the end pointed. Knot and trim any threads. Mine is about 3.75 inches wide and 5 inches tall. There's excess fabric on the top so it can be folded over and pinned or tucked into a pocket.

DIY Freeform Fabric Flower Lapel Pin

Supplies
Scrap green fabrics
Scissors
1 1/4 inch yo-yo maker (optional)
Needle and thread

Safety Pin (for wearing your lapel pin)

Instructions
Step 1: Snap fabric inside yo-yo maker and cut around the edge to make a circle. (You can also do this freehand if you don't have a yo-yo maker. This was a very fast way to make circles all the same size.) You need about 8 circles for one flower.

Step 2: Stack 5 circles of varying color overlapping as shown above. Stitch in place through center.

Step 3: Add another layer of circles in the center and stitch in place with needle and thread ending at the bottom of the stack.

Step 4: Fold stack in half through the center and in half again. Stitch through base of flower to secure. Use a safety pin to attach to lapel.

Do you have any plans for St. Patrick's Day? Are you going to wear green head to toe or make yourself a cute little lapel pin? I hope you enjoy the tutorial!
