DIY Tutorial – Ombre Stenciled Pillowcases

The Spring season is upon and as you may have noticed from my posts this week, I have all things pastel on the brain. I've also been working on sprucing things up around my apartment. So when I received these Stencil1 stencils by Ed Roth and FolkArt multi-surface paint, I knew that I wanted to make something for my apartment with soft pastel colors. And because I can't stop myself from sewing, I put a little twist on the traditional use of a stencil and used it to create an embroidery.

How to Wear Diamonds Everyday

I rarely go to formal functions but I love beautiful, classic jewelry and I want to enjoy it on a regular basis. So when Anjolee sent me these gorgeous earrings to try out I knew just what to do – create a Southwestern Glam look of course! I love colorful jewelry and have quite a few beaded pieces from my travels to New Mexico and Arizona in addition to some amazing turquoise that I've inherited. But I never want to wear all of it at once. Diamond earrings are great way to balance a heavy, colorful necklace and colorful beads.

Edgy Glam Jewelry from Rings & Tings

Rounding out this week's theme of Edgy Glam, I have some super cool jewelry pieces and a fun manicure to share with you. A few weeks ago, the lovely folks over at Rings & Tings offered to let me try out some of their jewelry pieces. They have a great selection of affordable, fashion-forward jewelry and fashion pieces so of course was delighted to oblige. I chose three pieces: the wave ring set, the crescent bib necklace and the black check earrings. I love all of the items and have been making good use of wearing them out.

Natural Beauty Secrets from a Recovering Style Phobic

For a long time I thought that my sense of style was seriously warped. I grew up in a town in Oregon filled with old hippies, where tie dye and Birkenstocks were the epitome of cool. Not only that but it was the 90s and the grunge era was in full force. It was an amazing place where not being mainstream was cool and being different was embraced. But it also meant that if you tried to look conventionally pretty you might be perceived as superficial and shallow. At the same time there wasn't pressure to look conventionally beautiful and I think I probably have a better self image because of that.

As a teen I read all the big fashion magazines – Vogue, W, Bazaar. Yet my style was more about function than fashion. Wearing fantastic fashion would have made me stick out like a sore thumb and I wasn't ready to go there. When I moved to California about 7 years ago, I was able to break away from the old less-is-better idea and start really experimenting with makeup and fashion. These days I'm not afraid to rock some harem pants or even eyeshadow (eyelid primer was a bit of a revelation for me). My beauty style is still understated and probably considered minimal by some. Just check out my with and without makeup photo evidence below. Pretty minimal right? For a full makeup look, I like to use some foundation to even out my skin tone, blush for a healthy glow, mascara and eyeliner to pop the eyes and lipstick to brighten the face. And that's it. Excepting that bright red lipstick it's a pretty natural look. (Do you like the headband I'm sporting here? Check out my DIY to make your own.)

Suffice it to say, my beauty journey has been a long one. I still don't know how to straighten my hair or apply liquid eyeliner. But I have found some natural beauty techniques that work for my often dry, rather sensitive skin.

1. Exfoliation Exfoliation is the best way to get rid of dead skin cells and keep pores clear. I like to use those peach colored exfoliating facial sponges you can find at any drugstore.

2. Tea tree oil This naturally anti-bacterial oil is great for treating the occasional blemish. I also use it in my home-made cleaning spray (in a spray bottle mix a few drops with white vinegar and water).

3. Aloe Vera gel Pure aloe vera gel (not the blue or green stuff) works great as a hair gel or even a shave gel. Really. You can't get more natural than 100% aloe vera. I have curly hair and it really works to tame the frizz.

4. Protect I've said it before and I'll say it again. Protecting your skin from the sun is the best thing you can do for it. Wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen and stay in the shade. Do it. You'll be glad you did later.

5. Moisturize In the last year or so, my skin has become drier than ever before. To help keep it moisturized and keep wrinkles at bay, I avoid hot water for cleansing, use a humidifier, drink lots of water, eat omega-3 rich food like fish oil and layer on loads of moisturizers. I've also been experimenting with the latest trend in skin care – the oil. So I was excited to receive the Seventh Generation Skin Serum Boost Soothing formula to try out. The boosts can be used alone or mixed with a moisturizer. I found the boost serum to have a really nice not-too-heavy texture and lovely aroma. There are 6 different formulas, so you can choose what works best for your skin type. Visit the website to take a quiz to find your ideal formula (There was a coupon when I completed the quiz. Bonus!).

What are your natural beauty secrets? Please share! I'd love to hear them.

Sponsor Spotlight – Adored Vintage

Adored Vintage is a gorgeous online shop with vintage and vintage-inspired clothing, jewelry and accessories run by Rodellee Bas. When I visited the site for the first time I think my jaw literally dropped. Everything in the store has a dreamy, magical beauty to it with none of the musty-closet feeling one often finds when vintage shopping. The selection is perfectly curated and overflowing with eye candy. As it goes with vintage, most of the pieces are one of kind so you'll need to snap up your favorites quickly. If you live in Southern California you can also visit their showroom in Long Beach, by appointment. If you can't make it to SoCal, check out a sneak peek at her showroom on Apartment Therapy. Now get your smelling salts in hand because here are a few of my swoon-worthy favorites from the shop:

I love these vintage party dresses. They are exactly the kind of dress I would and do wear to parties.

Hi friends, I've recently decided to start offering advertising space in the sidebar of my blog. As always, I'm dedicated to maintaining quality content on this blog. But blogging does cost some money so I'm hoping this will help compensate for that a bit. I have three sizes available for purchase through Passionfruit Ads. If you are so kind as to purchase an ad, I will do a mention of you on the blog. If you're interested, head over to my Work with Me page for more information.

Much Thanks! Beth

Wanna do an ad swap?

I've been thinking about advertising for a while now and the other day saw that Stelabird is doing an ad swap, so yeah, now I want to do it too. Would any of you fellow bloggers be interested in doing an ad swap with me? Naturally, I'd like to swap with blogs that have similar content. It would be totally free.

I'd post your ad for a month and you mine. Sound cool?
If you're interested, email me at lulalouise gmail com with your ad, 200 x 150 pixels (width x height) and the dates you'd like to swap.

Thanks!!
