About a year ago, I posted this free pattern for a chunky cable knit hat. Just in time for the winter, I've updated the instructions, worked out some kinks and created a large size hat as well. So, if you've been afraid of knitting cables, it's time to give it a shot. They're not that hard to do and look so very impressive. This pattern is knit flat and then sewn together. It knits up pretty quickly in just a few hours so you can make one for yourself and everyone in the family.
Disclaimer: This is a somewhat tested and definitely not perfect pattern. I do not guarantee that it will work for all knitters.

Thanks for sharing! I love how funky this pattern looks. Can't wait to try it!
ReplyDeleteLove the looks of this! Been looking for a nice cable hat to make for Christmas. From the picture, it doesn't seem to be a very long hat. Can you tell me what the finished length would be on the adult hat pattern? Thx so much!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for Sharing.. ♥
ReplyDeleteI think there might be a mistake in the pattern for the large hat; for k2p2 rib, you need a multiple of four stitches. I think the pattern should be adjusted so that you cast on 56 stitches and then adjust pattern as necessary. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Lula,
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute project! I love it so much that I decided to feature it in our roundup of cozy handmade hats! Check it out here: http://www.favecraftsblog.com/diy-winter-hats/
Have a great day!
Hi Lula,
ReplyDeleteOMG...I am on grown 5 of the 1st round for the cable pattern...I originally casted on 54 stitches....I dont have enough stitches to complete last cable. How can I fix this so I can continue my hat for my daughter...please forward response to tmkblvd@aol.com
Shame on me for not paying attention to the ribbing, "Make a knit 2, purl 2 rib for 8 rows." For those who may have done what I did aka day dreaming with reading a pattern, you start the rib on the RS K2, P2 so row 2 is reverse P2, K2 to the end, then back to K2, P2 for row 3. flip flop this to complete the 8 rows. If you don't it won't rib & you'll just have a pretty bumpy look.
ReplyDeleteRow 5 is goofy: "Row 5: (RS) *p1, slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k3, knit 3 sts from cable needle, p1* repeat to end." There isn't enough sts so I just fudged a little and for the last 6 sts I P1, slipped 3 to the needle, K1, K3 from the needle P1. It remains to be seen how this will work out hehe!
So far so good though, just keep knitting, just keep knitting! :)
Did you have to make any more adjustments for the rest of the pattern? How did it turn out?
DeleteI think row 5 is a little missed up I did p2, slip 3, instead of p1 slip3. So far so good
ReplyDeleteYes, unfortunatley, after my 3rd go at the large size something is not right. I'm not experienced enough to figure out the issue. It seems to be happening in row 5 of the cabled pattern. Help!!
ReplyDeleteIn row 5, I think you need to *p2, slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k3, knit 3 sts from cable needle, p1* repeat to end.
DeleteThe difference there is p2 NOT p1 at the beginning.
Everything else should work fine!
I think for the large hat, cable section row 5, the first P1 stitch just needs to be P2 and then slip 3. The 54 cast on stitches work just fine. Very happy with how it's shaping up! Thanks for the great pattern!
ReplyDeleteMay I suggest that the pattern be changed as follows:\rows 1-8 should be *k2, p2* repeat to end
ReplyDeleteSix stitch cable rows 1 & 3 should be *p1, k6, p1* repeat to end. Rows 2 & 4 should be *k1, p6, k1* repteat to end. Row5 should be (RS) *p1, slip 3 sts to cable needle anbd hold in front (C6F), k3, knit 3 sts from cable, p1, repeat to end. Wherever it's a k2 or p2 should be k1 & p1. Hope this helps other knitters.
I just posted a comment about the chunky knit hat and need to give more info - this is for the adult hat and you need 56 sts not 54. Sorry ;(
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pattern. Can I confirm something please? On the cable pattern row one is it p2 k6 p1. Then do you repeat the whole p2 k6 p1 or just repeat k6 p1 or just repeat p2 k6?
ReplyDeleteThanks very much!
Love this pattern, made the small size and this would fit a child. Next time I will make a large size. Very easy and fun to make!!!
ReplyDeleteI made adjustments to cable by Following Verplow. It fixed my cable issue but my hat turned out very small like a child's hat
ReplyDeleteI did the first pattern and it is not even big enough for my 10 month old baby. it turned out nice. I am going to end up giving it to my sister who is due to have her baby soon.
