Free Pattern – Chunky Cable Knit Hat (Revised)

About a year ago, I posted this free pattern for a chunky cable knit hat. Just in time for the winter, I've updated the instructions, worked out some kinks and created a large size hat as well. So, if you've been afraid of knitting cables, it's time to give it a shot. They're not that hard to do and look so very impressive. This pattern is knit flat and then sewn together. It knits up pretty quickly in just a few hours so you can make one for yourself and everyone in the family.

DIY Printable – Read More Books Iron On Transfer

Even though I think books are the best ever, I need a reminder sometimes. I so often find myself swept up in sewing or just looking for eye candy on the internet (I'm lookin' at you Pinterest) that I think I don't read as much as I should. So, in order to give myself a little reminder as well as a fun and useful tote, I created this "Read More Books" iron-on transfer design. I've had this DIY Printable in mind for a few months now and I'm so excited with how it turned out.

Free Knitting Pattern – Fingerless Knitted Mitts

These sweet little mitts are easy to make – great for beginning knitters – and will keep your hands toasty while your fingers keep typing. If you've ever tried to type in a cold office or house you'll know the value of a pair of fingerless hand covers. These are more simple than fingerless gloves or full mittens (hence the moniker "mitts") but still do the job of keeping your hands cozy and protected from the elements.

This is an easy, quick and satisfying knitting project. The stitches are very simple, just knit and purl and a few increase stitches that trust me even a beginner can do. These are knit flat so if you're intimidated by double pointed needles this is a great way to just get some practice. Each mitt has a seam at the inside along the thumb and the pattern is different for each hand with a seed stitch on top of the hand and stockinette stitch on the palm.

Free Printable - Crossed Arrows Valentine

Valentine's Day is quickly approaching which means it's time to start making valentines. I've always loved making my own valentines, cutting out paper hearts, making treat boxes and such. Last Friday I featured the font Berimbau as a nice pick for a Valentine's Day graphic. I adapted that design into a sweet little card free for you to download and print yourself.

Free Printable - 2013 Calendar

Just in time for the new year, here's a one page 2013 calendar in three colorways free for you to download and print. I've done a printable calendar for the last couple of years and it's something that I think about throughout the year.

This one is a little different this year. The whole year is on one page of 8.5 x 11 inches size of paper. The document has three pages, each with a different color theme (see other colors below). You can print all three and use them all yourself, or give them away as little new year gifts. The calendar uses the fonts Dude and Cubano from Lost Type Co-Op and Franklin Gothic for the numbers. I hope you enjoy these! Happy New Year!

Click here to download the calendar.

Please feel free to share the calendar and link to this post (not to the download link please).

DIY Printable – Christmas Gifttags

I can hardly believe that it's almost Christmas. If you're anything like me you have a few (or all!) of your presents left to wrap. So for today's Font Friday I've chosen two fonts that are perfect for a fun, casual Christmas and I  made them into some Christmas hangtags, free for you to download. (Yay!)

The first font is Blackout from The League of Movable Type which looks like letters cut out from construction paper. There are three versions - Midnight, 2AM and Sunrise. I'd love to try cutting out these letters out and make a garland. The second font is Cubano from Lost Type Co-Op, a rounded, chunky sans-serif, not unlike one Mr. Clause.

Free Download – Desktop and iPhone Wallpaper

Who says you can't wear white after Labor Day? Certainly not I. So just in case you need help bucking tradition, here are downloadable images for you to dress up your desktop or iphone.

I'm really loving white type on photos these days and have been wanting to try my hand at for a while. (Check out my Design pinboard on pinterest for some examples.) I designed these using an Instagram photo I took of a wall and the font Knewave, free from League of Movable Type. I love the white of the photo and the shadows created by the curved panels. I didn't want to be cheesy but I couldn't think of anything nicer to say than "you are loved".

Let's not leave your little iphone buddy out in the cloud.

September Theme – Quilting

Quilting has always appealed to me as a great way to combine two dimensional design and craft. I took a quilting class about 6 or 7 years ago and I've started a few quilts but never actually finished. So, in order to jump start my quilt making, I'm making quilting and piecing the theme for September. This month I'll be sharing inspiration, works in progress and hopefully some finished projects too. I hope that you will come back and visit throughout the month.

Craft from the Past – Felted Crochet Beach Bag with Free Pattern

Accessories month is coming to a close but it's not too late to share one more project. I crocheted this bag a number of years ago (even longer ago than this one). Lucky for you I wrote up a pattern for it. It's been available on my patterns page as a pdf download but now here it is for you online.

Friday Faves - June 15

Today's font is Weston, available for free on Font Fabric. It's a nice, rounded slab serif with a slightly western feel. I've used the font for my Pleated Skirt Tutorial and my Button Front Skirt Tutorial and really like the look and feel of it. As is common with free fonts, it doesn't have all of the characters one may want – such as an apostrophe.

Check out all the Friday Fonts on Twitter @fontfriday. And if you feel like getting your tweet on, don't forget to follow me on twitter too.

I  love the whimsical quality of these bird print dresses. So adorable and fun. What do you think? Do you have any whimsically printed dresses? Are they hard to wear?

Free Pattern Recycled Corduroy Blanket

This recycled corduroy blanket is one of my all time favorite projects and beyond a doubt the best blanket in the world. I know that might be hard for you to believe but that's only because you have not taken a nap or watched tv with this blanket. If you did, you'd know that it is the best blanket in the world.
I made this blanket about 6 years ago using wide wale corduroy (you remember that 90s fave fabric right?) that I rescued from the Goodwill pile. Wide wale corduroy has those soft, fat ridges of fluff.
The blanket is made of alternating columns of corduroy squares and narrow rectangles with a backing of microfleece. The pattern is available for FREE on my website.

If I were to do it all over again (which I hope to one day in lovely neutral colors), I'd use a larger seam allowance and actually quilt (topstitch) the top of the blanket. I've had issues with the seam coming apart on this quilt but I just use a narrow zig-zag (buttonhole stitch) to tack the fabric down and all is right again.

Between the microfleece and the wide wale corduroy this blanket is so soft and has the perfect heft to it. And, very importantly it's long enough to fit over my feet and still cover my arms (about 70 inches long). That's maximum warmth and there's not much else you can ask for in a blanket. Seriously, best blanket ever.
