Hi Friends! I started a new Instagram account over the weekend. (I know. I'm kind of crazy.) I've had one for about a year and half that chronicles my day to day journeys. And I love that account and my photos there but it focuses more on building, landscapes and the occasional food shot. I felt like my DIY projects didn't really fit in there so I've created a new place to do just that. Printic App Review (Sponsored Post)

Back in the year 2000, when I got my first SLR (that's right, not a DSLR, a classic SLR) I could not conceive how far digital photography was going to come. In those days, film was predominant and the only way to see your photos was to have them printed. These days, you can see your photos instantaneously but rarely are they printed. I miss those days of printed photos. Don't you? Well, here's an easy way that could help us all travel back to those analog days.

Happy Birthday to Me!

This last week has been so busy. Between birthday celebrations for others and celebrating my own birthday it's been non-stop. One of the birthday gifts I'm most excited about is my new 50mm camera lens. Nerdy. I know. So, I wanted to show off one of my first photos using the new lens that I took at a friend's birthday. It does take some getting used to not being able to zoom but you just have to back up or move closer. Not that hard. I'm really looking forward to playing around with this lens some more and I will definitely share with you.

Friday Faves – Che's Bone Font

Today's Font Friday is Che's Bone by Filiz Sahin available for free on Behance. This is a fun dog bone themed display font that even comes with two frames. This font could work really well for a You will only be able to utilize the font if you have a vector editing program like illustrator. It is not available in traditional font file format. It comes in .ai, .eps, .jpg and .pdf. It's fun to play around with and I did a fair amount of fiddling with letter height and spacing to get my graphic just the way I like it. The photo is one I took of a building in Santa Monica a few weeks ago and then edited in PhotoShop. The phrase is of course from this song.

Friday Faves – Sanchez Font and Instagram Photos

Today's Font Friday is Sanchez from My Fonts. Sanchez is a lovely, clean slab serif font. This font is similar to a classic slab serif like Rockwell but has a few special curves added in. Be sure to check out the "K" and "Q". The Regular and Italic versions are available for free. Buy the whole family and you'll get Extra Light, Light, Semi-Bold, Bold and Black, all in regular and italic. You can't get much more complete than that. Oh wait you can, there's also a Sanchez Condensed family.

These are all photos that I took using my iphone and posted on Instagram (you can follow me @bethwould). Instagram is probably my favorite social media. It allows one to share while being visually creative.

ROCKTOBER BABY! Maybe better than Oktoberfest? Rocktober lasts longer right? Anyway, I took this photo at The Black Keys concert at The Staples Center.  Lots of fun!

OK, last example. I love the the composition of this photo and all the different elements – peeling paint, tiles, numbers, metal, red bell. And if you don't recognize the song lyric you need to listen to this song immediately. It sounds cooler in your head if you have the tune to go along with it. Have a great weekend!!

Friday Faves – Sept 7

Today's Friday Font is Canoe Handwriting from My Fonts. Canoe captures a casual hand made feeling that fits so well with quilt month. Adorable right? It's a font that you could like take camping or maybe eat granola and tea with.

Inspiration can be found anywhere from a dirty alley to a spindly tree to an architectural gem. Here are some of my favorite instagram photos that I've taken over the past few weeks. That blue sky just kills me. Love. You can follow me on instagram at @bethwould or on flickr.

I had a really hard time deciding what to feature for the "faves" this week and finally settled on four recent favorite pins from Pinterest. If you're anything like me, you're kind of addicted to pinterest. Collecting a visual catalogue of ideas is a dream come true for me. So, here's a little sampling of things I've found inspiring.

1. From my "Design" pinboard: Design for Hot Dang burgers by Make & Matter, a design studio in Austin, Texas The Design board is collection of graphic design that I find inspirational.

2. From my "Color Study" pinboard: natural dye from Anthropologie The color study board is anything with a particularly beautiful color palette. You will find a lot of art on this board.

3. From my "Works in Progress and Beautiful Messes" board: Brownie cookies with Salted Caramel Filling from Bakers Royale This board celebrates the creative process and the messiness required to be creative.

4. From my "Yummy Pretty Eats" pinboard: Oat Milk Smoothie from Golubka The name of this pinboard perfectly describes the contents: beautiful photos of delicious food.

Thursday Thriftday – August 23

This Argus Autronic 35 camera was probably my most exciting thrift purchase ever. I bought it online from a Goodwill auction. I won the bid for about $12 but the camera is so dang heavy that the shipping cost bumped up the total price to $28.

I'm really excited to start using this camera and conveniently it uses 35 mm film. I'll be sure to share when I finally use it. Do you have any vintage cameras? Have you ever seen one like this?

Today I just want to share some photos from a recent trip I made to Cincinnati. It was a really beautiful city. Being from the Western U.S. where everything is relatively new, what struck me most was how old the buildings are there. Check out my set on Flickr to see more.

 

Thursday Thriftday – June 21

I found this amazing dress at a Palm Springs Goodwill back in April when I was in town for Coachella. It's an amazing dress and would have been the perfect bohemian for the festival. (Although I was there on the cold days and wore jeans, boots, coats and a hat and I was still cold.) Below are some pics from the festival. I love concerts but festivals aren't really my thing. I think I'd much rather see the bands in non-festival settings. But it was fun to go check out the action.

I joined Instagram this weekend. Although I'm still learning, it is as much fun as I expected it to be. I'm posting the photos to my flickr account (which seems to be the easiest way to follow along). I really enjoy the immediacy of being able to pull out my phone, take a snapshot and send it out to the world. Most of the time, I'd rather communicate with pictures than words anyway. Also putting the effects on my photos is pretty fun. It can make an ordinary picture a little extra special. Are you on instagram? What do you think?

DIY Camera Strap

Inspired by this camera strap tutorial on the Design Love Fest blog and my recent foray into fabric painting, I made this camera for my Holga 120N. The strap that came with the camera was a very thin black and red striped webbing.

To make my strap, I gathered some materials from my stash: 2 metal D-rings, webbing (ugly camouflage pattern that I am all too happy to cover up) and fabric. The materials came together perfectly for this project.The D-rings are perfectly sized to the webbing and the webbing was just long enough – 29.5 inches. The strip of fabric was from a failed skirt waistband and already interfaced.

I cut the fabric 2.5 inches wide by 31.5 inches long. I stitched it into a long tube using a .25 inch seam allowance and turned it right side out. I then slid the fabric over the webbing and painted on my design.

I folded in the raw edge of the fabric, slipped on a D-ring, and folded the fabric over it to the wrong side of the strap, added a bit of glue and held it all in place with a binder clip until it dried. To finish I stitched through all the layers using a heavy weight sewing needle. And all done!

It was really fun to see everything at the fair. But there was so much amazing stuff that I felt a little overwhelmed.

LA river viewed from the Metro Gold Line / A little "Jewel City" notebook I received while visiting The Gap at the Glendale Galleria.
The GAP store has been beautifully (and completely) redesigned to look and function more like a designer boutique than a mall store. Gone are the bulging, messy sale racks and traditional merchandising. In its place are elegant shelves, funky cut out hangers and casually arranged art books. The transformation is shocking and I can't wait to see more.
